It’s sunny outside, I’m hungry for tasty food…it’s the perfect setting for my Appia Antica and Porchetta Day! I jump on my steamy red Vespa Primavera (you can rent one from BiciBaci) and head south on via Appia Antica.
Five minutes out of the city center and I’m already surrounded by the smell of flowers and trees. My Vespa trembles over the stoney roman pavement and the sunlight pierces the leaves brighting up the old traditional cottages on the sides of the street.
I reach the Sanctuary of Cecilia Metella, the door to that unique constellation of mausoleums and ancient ruins that make the Appia Antica park so unique.
I park my vespa and proceed on foot among the mixture of countryside views and monumental sightseeing. The silence of the fields and the peace of the silent ruins inspire my mind and fill up my spirit, but not my stomach! Time for a quick coffee and then back to my scooter for the next stop: Ariccia!
I take via della basilica and then head out on Appia Pignatelli, going on straight out of town for 30 min till I ride through the massive Ariccia bridge. A delicious smell permeates the central square of the village, hundreds of romans are already in town sitting at one of the famous “Fraschette”.
I choose one and order according to tradition: a mix of cheeses, ham, porchetta, sausages and so on to start; carbonara pasta as main course! A refreshing red wine helps my digestion and soon my hunger for culture and delicacies is satisfied!
